چکیده

| Onsager's second kind of \reciprocal relations" state that (~ H) = T (? ~ H) where is the 3 3 conductance matrix, ~ H is an externally applied magnetic eld, and T means matrix transpose. This is only supposed to hold for \linear" materials for which the current density ~ J is related to the electric eld ~ E by h ~ Ji = ~ E. This is just one instance of a class of mathematically equivalent but physically diierent relations; e.g. the same relation is supposed to hold if is thermal conductivity and ~ H is angular velocity for a rotating system. We demonstrate by two counterexamples that this relation (and its isomorphs) can be dramatically false. We also have counterexamples to the Onsager relations of the rst kind (which are the special case ~ H = ~ 0). There are two aws in Onsager's reasoning and each counterexample exploits one of them. Both aws had already been thought of but I feel that they are insuuciently appreciated. If we instead deene to be the 3 3 diierential con-ductance (Jacobian) matrix = dh ~ E) where D is for the original material, but L is for a \reversed" material in which all spins and angular momenta (and consequently all magnetic dipoles), and the chirality (by a central inversion of 3-space) are reversed. In the limit j ~ Ej ! 0 (the \zero voltage limit") D(~ H) = T U (? ~ H) where U is for a \spin-reversed" material. Note that the U (or L) and D materials could be inequivalent { in which case Onsager's relation is not about one, but actually about two, materials, and hence is less useful. Apparently there have been zero intentional experimental tests (so far) of any Onsager relation in a material inequivalent to its reversal; but I will argue that a 1996 experiment by Solin, Thio, et al. quite likely disproved Onsager's relations of the second kind.

Onsager's reciprocal relations in electrolyte solutions. I. Sedimentation and electroacoustics.

In the framework of irreversible thermodynamics, we show that the sedimentation current in electrolyte solutions is mathematically equivalent to the low frequency limit of the ionic vibration current, appearing in the presence of an acoustic wave. This non-trivial result is obtained thanks to a careful choice of the reference frame used to express the mass fluxes in the context of electroacoust...

Onsager's reciprocal relations for electroacoustic and sedimentation: Application to (concentrated) colloidal suspensions.

In this article, the relations for electroacoustic phenomena, such as sedimentation potential, sedimentation intensity, colloid vibration potential, colloid vibration intensity/current, or electric sonic amplitude, are given, on the basis of irreversible thermodynamics. This formalism allows in particular to discuss the different expressions for concentrated suspensions found by various authors...

Verification of Onsager's reciprocal relations for evaporation and condensation using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics.

Non-equilibrium molecular dynamic (NEMD) simulations have been used to study heat and mass transfer across a vapor-liquid interface for a one-component system using a Lennard-Jones spline potential. It was confirmed that the relation between the surface tension and the surface temperature in the non-equilibrium system was the same as in equilibrium (local equilibrium). Interfacial transfer coef...

Collective transitivity in majorities based on difference in support

A common criticism to simple majority voting rule is the slight support that such rule demands to declare an alternative as a winner. Among the distinct majority rules used for diminishing this handicap, we focus on majorities based on difference in support. With these majorities, voters are allowed to show intensities of preference among alternatives through reciprocal preference relations. Th...

Reciprocal, longitudinal associations among adolescents' negative feedback-seeking, depressive symptoms, and peer relations.

This study examined reciprocal associations among adolescents' negative feedback-seeking, depressive symptoms, perceptions of friendship quality, and peer-reported social preference over an 11-month period. A total of 478 adolescents in grades 6-8 completed measures of negative feedback-seeking, depressive symptoms, friendship quality, global-self-esteem, and social anxiety at two time points. ...
